Why Storage Is a Quality Issue, Not Just a Safety Issue
Most lab managers think about chemical storage primarily in terms of safety — preventing fires, avoiding accidental spills, keeping staff safe. All of this is important. But for a diagnostic lab, storage is equally a quality and accuracy issue.
When a reagent is stored at the wrong temperature, exposed to excessive light, or kept past its shelf life, its chemistry changes. Enzymes denature. Buffers shift pH. Dyes oxidise. The reagent may still look normal — same colour, same viscosity — but its performance in a test is compromised. The result your analyser produces may be slightly wrong. And in clinical chemistry, slightly wrong can still mean the wrong clinical decision.

The Five Temperature Zones: Know Where Each Chemical Belongs
Every chemical your lab stocks should be assigned to one of five storage temperature zones. These zones are defined by the chemical’s MSDS and COA. Your job as a lab manager is to ensure the correct infrastructure exists for each zone and that chemicals are not mixed between zones.
Deep Frozen Storage
Required for long-term storage of certain enzymes, antibodies, PCR reagents and some calibrators. A dedicated laboratory freezer is mandatory — never a domestic unit.
Examples: Taq polymerase, lyophilised enzyme standards, frozen QC sera, some ELISA components
Refrigerated Storage
The most common storage zone for biochemical reagents. A dedicated laboratory refrigerator — with a calibrated thermometer and temperature log — is essential. Never store food here.
Examples: GOD-POD glucose reagent, CHOD-PAP cholesterol, HDL reagent, Leishman stain (diluted), most liquid reagents
Cool Storage
Some chemicals require protection from heat but not full refrigeration. An air-conditioned chemical store, away from direct sunlight, often satisfies this requirement.
Examples: Some buffer solutions, certain dye concentrates, photographic developer chemicals
Controlled Room Temperature
Many dry chemicals and solvents are stored at room temperature — but this means temperature-controlled rooms, not uncontrolled areas. In Indian summers, “room temperature” can mean 38°C without AC, which is not acceptable.
Examples: Most dry salts and powders, acetone (sealed), ethanol (in flammable cabinet), xylene
Dry / Desiccated Storage
Hygroscopic chemicals absorb moisture from the air, changing their concentration and weight. These must be stored with desiccant in sealed containers, away from any source of humidity.
Examples: Anhydrous calcium chloride, phosphorus pentoxide, sodium hydroxide pellets, lyophilised reagent kits
