Getting the reagent selection right is not optional — it is foundational.

In a busy diagnostic lab, reagents can start to feel like commodities — items to be purchased at the lowest available price from the nearest supplier. This mindset is understandable, but it carries serious risk when applied to glucose and lipid panel reagents.

The results produced by these tests directly influence whether a patient is diagnosed with diabetes, prescribed statins, or referred to a cardiologist. A reagent with even modest inaccuracy — a few percentage points of impurity, or the wrong enzyme concentration — can push a borderline result in the wrong direction. The patient suffers. Understanding the Glucose Panel: What You’re Testing

Glucose testing is among the highest-volume tests in any clinical biochemistry lab. Before selecting a reagent, it helps to be precise about which glucose parameters your lab measures and by which methods

The vast majority of glucose testing in Indian labs uses the GOD-POD (Glucose Oxidase-Peroxidase) enzymatic method because it is specific, reproducible and compatible with most semi-automatic and fully automatic biochemistry analysers. Hexokinase is considered the gold standard for accuracy and is increasingly used in high-throughput labs.

Red Flags: Signs of a Sub-Standard Reagent

Knowing what to avoid is as important as knowing what to look for. Here are the most common signs that a biochemical reagent is not of sufficient quality for clinical use:

No Batch-Specific COA

A supplier who provides a generic or undated COA — rather than a batch-specific certificate showing actual test results — cannot verify the purity or enzyme activity of the specific lot you received. Reject and request a genuine batch COA.

Vague Enzyme Activity Specifications

The COA should state enzyme activity in U/mL (or U/L) with both the specification limit and the actual measured result for that batch. “Meets spec” or “as required” is not acceptable — demand the number.

Unusual Colour or Precipitate on Receipt

Most clear biochemical reagents should arrive visually transparent or with the expected slight colour. Cloudiness, visible precipitate, or unexpected colour changes indicate degradation during transport or storage — do not use and report to the supplier immediately.

QC Failure on First Use

If a new reagent lot fails your internal QC (controls outside acceptable range) on first use, do not assume the calibration is wrong. Run your existing reagent alongside the new lot. If the existing lot passes and the new lot fails, the reagent is the problem — not your analyser.

Expiry Date Within 3 Months of Delivery

A reagent delivered with less than 3 months of shelf life remaining gives your lab insufficient time to use it safely across a full ordering cycle. Always specify minimum remaining shelf life (at least 6 months) in your purchase orders.

No MSDS / Handling Documentation

Even “safe” biochemical reagents contain enzymes and buffer components that require proper handling. A supplier who does not provide an MSDS is not operating to ISO standards and should not supply a NABL-accredited lab.
